Chapter 21

Ferenc

The closer Ferenc got to the law firm, the more the tightness in his chest grew, until he could barely breathe. His knuckles turned white from his grip on the steering wheel—despite his fracture’s protests—and every worst-case scenario flooded through his mind. He wanted answers.

No, he needed answers.

He’d consoled Dormouse until her sobs had become hiccups, until she’d eventually calmed down entirely. She hadn’t run, which was a bonus, and had actually smiled while eating the reheated breakfast. She’d fallen asleep on the couch while he’d done the dishes, and he’d taken the opportunity to quietly leave after writing her a note that he’d return with a new sliding door. Of course, he’d left out the part where he’d stop in and visit Amy’s lawyer first. Dormouse didn’t need to know that part.

He steered into the imposing building’s parking lot, pulling up as close to the door as possible. In and out. That was his intention, anyway. Many of the concocted worst-case scenarios in his head took a little longer. He hoped none of them would come true.

As he stepped out of the car, adjusting his arm and shoulder back into his brace—mostly to ease the pain, but also to garner a little sympathy in case things went south—part of him wasn’t just frustrated about the strange situation with Dormouse. Of all the lawyers, Amy had chosen the richest, most prestigious and grandiose in all of Florida. His own lawyer probably didn’t compare with experience or money, and definitely didn’t compare status-wise.

A low hum of chatter greeted him as he walked into the lobby toward the alcove with the elevators, past pacing clients venting on calls and slouching ones in gray leather chairs, scrolling on their smartphones.

Ferenc arrived on the fifth floor and approached the counter, where an older woman with her black hair in a neat and tidy bun eyed his sling and brace before greeting him with a wide smile that pulled at the wrinkles around her eyes.

“Can I help you?”

“Hi. I need to speak with Richard Moyon, please.”

Her smile never left as she gave her automated reply. “Do you have an appointment?”

“No. I just really need to speak with him right now. It’s really important.”

“I’m afraid I can’t let you see him without an appointment, honey. Would you like me to see if I can get one of the other lawyers to—”

“No.” Her smile finally faltered, and he forced a weak one of his own. “No, it absolutely has to be Richard Moyon. It’ll only take a few minutes. It’s really important.”

He hated doing this. Under different circumstances, he’d have waited, but the longer it took to get his answers, the more an inexplicable fire roared inside of him; but most importantly, the sooner Dormouse would awaken and have the chance to run away again.

“Let me take down your name and number—”

“Look . . .” He squeezed his lips together, his mind reeling. He was quickly losing control of the situation. “Can you call him? Tell him it’s Ferenc Janos.
